Caleb Way, Mercy Hill's summer intern cheers on his kick ball teamWe define sacred space as making an ordinary space holy by our presence--rather, the presence of Jesus in us.
Mercy Hill sacred space event for July took place on a beautiful Thursday night at East New Street Park in Glassboro. In partnership with the Glassboro Parks and Rec Department, Mercy Hill's summer intern, Caleb Way, helped to organize an opportunity for service, mercy, and grace.
Twenty people from among the Mercy Hill family came to play with kids, meet new people, and show our love for our community. Most of the fun was had on the wiffle ball and kick ball fields as heated competition got everyone cheering. Jeremiah, a new friend in our fellowship, jumped right in as the umpire and catcher for wiffle ball.
Five pairs of skates were raffled off. One pair was not the right size, so we ended up giving the child a gift card instead. The family, who sometimes has to choose between buying food or paying the bills, was very appreciative, especially since the young lady's birthday was coming up soon.
No sermon was preached, no prayer was given. Some might ask, "What's the point?"
The point is this: most Christians know more than they do. This is a sign of immaturity.
James teaches us faith without work is dead. We might paraphrase this teaching by saying, doctrine without deeds is dead. We share the love of Christ with people who might never see him.
Stay tuned for our next sacred space. If you are not a part of our local church family, please keep us in prayer as we make efforts to not only "go to church," but "be the church."
