God and College

Recently, Pastor Phil Henry gave some counsel to a couple of our young members who were headed off to college.

The following is a short summary of what he said to these two new freshmen. The ideas here are helpful for any parent with college age children, as well as for anyone who is serious about growing their faith.

I wanted to remind you of a couple of things . First, college is not about a job no matter what people say. It is about becoming human. That's why an important part of the curriculum at schools is called the humanities.

Second, in light of this, Christians believe being fully human means understanding as a creature who the creator is. That's why it is called a university. All truth points to God. One God. One truth. All truth is Gods truth.

So while all kids aren't called to get a religious education (and not all religious educations are worth getting IMHO) all kids are called to seek God at college.

Here are a few ways to do so:

  • find a church community within 4 weeks. And make it a habit.
  • find a campus fellowship group or bible study of peers
  • make time for needy people in your life. Many of your classmates need to see what a real live follower of Jesus looks like.
  • be on the lookout for a spouse. And make sure he (or she) is passionate about Jesus and can help set an example of faith for you.
