Volunteers Needed for ESL Classes in Bridgeton
The Community Center in downtown Bridgeton hosts an English as a Second Language class and classes for the fall have begun.
As many as 15 adults come out each Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00-8:00pm to improve their English speaking and writing skills.
This ministry is part of an organization called ReviveSJ. It has been a great opportunity for people from various churches in South Jersey to demonstrate the love of Christ and to build relationships with people needing these new skills.
However, more volunteers are needed.
Here's how a typical evening works.
- a teacher reviews the basics of conversational English and simple reading in a fun, relaxed environment.
- About halfway through the evening, the class splits into smaller groups so that students can practice reading and pronunciation with the help of volunteers from local churches.
As word is getting out about this great opportunity, though, more and more volunteers are needed to work with these eager students. Please consider volunteering your time one night a week (either Tuesday or Thursday) from now through December 5.
Classes meet on Tuesday and Thursdays from 6:00-8:00pm at 136 Commerce Street, Bridgeton. (First Baptist Church helps us by allowing us to use their "Youth Building" as a Community Center).
No prior experience is needed to volunteer. The relaxed, informal atmosphere makes it easy to "jump in" at any time. Volunteers so far have found this to be a fun, easy way to build relationships and to help others (while learning a little Spanish on the side!)
For more information, please contact Pastor Claude Taylor of New Hope Presbyterian (OPC) Church at taylor.1 at opc dot org.
Also, please, pray for all involved in this work, that those who need it would be truly helped on their paths to citizenship, that stronger English skills will lead to greater levels of participation in their communities, and that the Lord would call disciples of Jesus to Himself and to His Church.
